TL;DR
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can lift a direct answer from your page and cite you. It matters because buyers read the answer and skip the click, and Pew found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of Google visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. Answer engines retrieve pages from an index before they write, so crawler access and indexing come before any rewriting. An answer-ready page puts the answer in the first sentences under a question-shaped heading, in plain text, with sources behind its claims. Run AEO as a loop, with citation checks on a fixed set of buyer questions in every engine and a quarterly page audit. Expect small numbers first, since one program I run drew 0.11% of traffic from AI answers while another grew AI-sourced sessions from 335 to 3,200 a month.
Key takeaways
- AEO builds on SEO, because answer engines retrieve from search indexes before they write.
- Log linked citations and bare mentions separately, per engine, and never average engines into one score.
- Query fan-out turns one buyer question into several searches, so topic depth wins more of them.
- Check crawler access for Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot before you rewrite anything.
- The page-alone test finds defects that a checklist score misses.
- Small early numbers are the signal worth protecting, because cited sources get retrieved again.
Why I Run Answer Engine Optimization as a Pipeline Channel
At an HR tech SaaS company where I was fractional head of marketing, AI-sourced sessions grew from 335 to 3,200 a month. At the data and AI services company where I am CMO, AI answers sent 677 visitors in eighteen months, just 0.11% of traffic. Both numbers came from the same discipline, answer engine optimization.
Most guides sell AEO as a new trick. It is mostly search fundamentals, applied to a reader that lifts one passage from your page and ignores the rest.
Below is the version I run, from how the engines pick their sources to the page checklist and the metrics I track. It ends with a worked rewrite and an honest look at what results to expect.
What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Defined
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can lift a direct answer from your page and cite you as the source. The goal is to be the passage an engine quotes, as well as a link it ranks.
AEO marketing is the program wrapped around that work. It decides which buyer questions you own, which pages answer them, and how often you check whether the engines name you.
Is AEO the Same as SEO?
No, AEO sits on top of SEO rather than replacing it. Answer engines retrieve from search indexes, so a page that cannot be crawled, indexed and ranked cannot be quoted.
Google says as much in its guide to AI features and your website, which lists no technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. SEO gets the page into the candidate set, and AEO makes the right sentence easy to lift.
GEO, generative engine optimization, is the closely related work of being cited in answers an AI writes from several sources. My comparison of AEO, GEO and SEO shows where the three differ and why I run them as one program with one owner.
Why Does Answer Engine Optimization Matter for B2B Buyers?
Answer engine optimization matters because buyers increasingly read the answer and skip the click. A buyer who asks ChatGPT or Perplexity reads one synthesized response citing three or four sources, and may never run a classic search.
The click data points the same way. A Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults' Google searches in March 2025 found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. They clicked a link inside the summary itself in just 1% of visits.
Google's May 2025 guidance adds that people in its AI experiences ask longer, more specific questions, and that clicks from pages with AI Overviews are higher quality. Fewer clicks, each carrying more intent, is what a B2B funnel feels.
The uncomfortable part is that you can hold strong rankings and still be absent from the answers your buyers read, and most dashboards will not show it. The engines are forming their habits of whom to cite right now, which is why I start this work before the numbers look big.
What Counts as an Answer Engine Today?
An answer engine is any system that replies with an answer instead of a list of links. Six matter for most B2B brands, plus Gemini and voice, and the table below uses only what each company states in its own documentation as I read it in October 2026.
Those sources include Google's featured snippets guide, OpenAI's ChatGPT search launch post and Perplexity's help center explainer on how Perplexity works.
| Engine | Where answers appear | What it retrieves from | Citation format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Featured snippets | A box atop Google results, and in related questions | Google's index, with Google choosing the page | The summary appears first, with the link after it |
| Google AI Overviews | Google Search results pages | Google's index, snippet-eligible pages, with query fan-out | Links to supporting pages |
| Google AI Mode | An AI response in Google Search for complex questions | Google's index, with query fan-out across subtopics | Links to supporting sites |
| ChatGPT search | ChatGPT, when it searches or the user clicks the search icon | Third-party search providers and partner content, crawled by OAI-SearchBot | Links, plus a Sources sidebar |
| Perplexity | Perplexity answers | A real-time web search, crawled by PerplexityBot | Numbered citations that link to each source |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries | Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partners | Content Bing retrieves through grounding queries | Sources, counted in Bing's AI Performance report |
Gemini belongs on the list too. Google's common crawlers documentation says Gemini Apps can ground answers in content from the Google Search index at prompt time, so the same indexing work carries over.
Voice assistants are the strictest of all, with room for one spoken answer, so answer-first writing serves them too.
How Does Answer Engine Optimization Work?
Answer engine optimization works because answer engines retrieve before they write. The engine turns a question into one or more searches, pulls candidate pages from an index, reads passages from them, writes one answer and attaches the sources it used.
- Query. The engine reads the question and decides whether to search. OpenAI says ChatGPT chooses to search the web based on what you ask, or when you click the web search icon.
- Fan-out. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one response.
- Retrieval. Each search pulls candidate pages from an index the engine can reach, which is why crawler access and indexing come first.
- Synthesis. The model reads passages from those pages and writes a single answer.
- Citation. The engine credits the pages it relied on, as inline links, a sources panel or numbered citations.
Fan-out changes how you plan content. One buyer question becomes several hidden searches, so a hub whose spokes answer each sub-question competes for more of them than one page can.
Bing shows those hidden searches from the publisher side. Its AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, in public preview since February 10, 2026, lists grounding queries. Bing defines them as the key phrases the AI used when retrieving content that it then cited.
In those logs the current year keeps appearing in the queries the engines write for themselves, so a page stamped with last year loses citations.
The model's training memory is a second, slower route that rarely carries a link, so I put the effort into retrieval. My guide on how to get cited by ChatGPT covers the two routes in more depth.
AEO Best Practices: What Does an Answer-Ready Page Look Like?
AEO best practices come down to one answer-ready page at a time. That page lets every search crawler reach it, puts the answer in plain text at the top of each section, and states each claim so it survives being quoted alone.
I use the table below as the AEO checklist for every page that should win a buyer question. The first four rows decide whether an engine can use the page at all.
| Element | What to do | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Crawler access | Allow Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and at the CDN or firewall | Read robots.txt and fetch the page with each user agent, looking for a normal page and no block |
| Indexing | Get the page indexed in Google and Bing | Inspect the URL in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools |
| Snippet eligibility | Remove nosnippet, data-nosnippet, tight max-snippet limits and noindex from pages you want quoted | Search the page source and headers for each of those rules |
| Answer in plain text | Keep the main answer in the page HTML as text, not inside a script, image or closed accordion | Open view-source and find the answer sentence |
| Question-shaped headings | Phrase each H2 the way a buyer asks the question | Compare headings with People Also Ask boxes and sales call notes |
| Answer-first opening | Answer the heading in full in the first one or two sentences | Read only the first two sentences under each heading |
| Standalone claims | Write each major claim as a sentence that makes sense quoted alone | Copy a sentence out of the page and see if it still holds up |
| Tables and lists | Put comparisons into tables and processes into numbered steps | Count comparisons and processes still written as long paragraphs |
| Sources and examples | Back every number with a named source and add a concrete example | Check that each statistic names where it came from |
| Byline and dates | Show a real author plus published and updated dates | Confirm the visible dates match the dates in the Article markup |
| Structured data | Add valid schema that matches the visible text | Run the Rich Results Test and compare the markup with the page |
| Internal links | Link the hub to every spoke and every spoke back to the hub | Open each spoke and confirm both links exist |
Score each row 0, 1 or 2 per page, leaving rows that do not apply out of the average. A page can still pass every row and only imply its answer.
So I finish with the page-alone test from my book on agentic AI marketing. Write down the facts a correct answer must contain, give a model the page text and one buyer question, and ask it to answer from that page alone.
I log each failure as missing content, ambiguous content or a model error. The first two get fixed before anything the checklist score says, and the full procedure sits in my one-day AI visibility audit.
What Happens Off Your Own Site?
Answer engines also read what other sites say about you, so on-page work is only half the job. Reviews, earned mentions and consistent product facts help an engine confirm the entity it is about to cite.
At the data and AI services company we ran G2 and Clutch review programs and built the inbound engine without a single paid backlink. At the HR tech company, reviews grew across eight platforms, and my AEO strategy guide covers earned mentions and entity consistency in depth.
Answer Engine Optimization Examples: A Before and After Rewrite
The quickest way to see these practices is one section rewritten. This example is illustrative, written for this guide, not taken from a client page.
Imagine a data consultancy section headed "Our Perspective on Data Readiness", when the buyer's real question is whether they need a data warehouse before adopting AI.
Before
Data has become central to how modern businesses compete. Many organizations are exploring AI, and many are finding that the journey raises questions about infrastructure. Our team has worked across many industries and brings a practical perspective to these questions.
That passage contains no claim worth lifting, so the engine moves on to a page that has one.
After
The heading becomes "Do You Need a Data Warehouse Before Adopting AI?" and the section opens like this.
Not always, but you need clean, governed data in one place your AI tools can query. A warehouse is the common way to get there, and a smaller team can start with one well-modelled source. Pick the first AI use case, then build only the data foundation that use case needs.
- The heading is the buyer's question. It matches how the question gets typed.
- The first sentence answers it. A direct reply plus the condition that matters.
- Each sentence stands alone. Any one could be quoted without the others.
- The throat-clearing is gone. Claims about the team move to a byline and a case study.
How Do You Do AEO? The Process I Run
Run AEO as one loop on two clocks, a citation check on a fixed cadence and a quarterly page audit. The method is workflow #6 of the 48 in my book, AI search visibility tracking and AEO/GEO audit, and it has three moves called Measure, Fix and Compound.
- Choose the questions. Write 10 to 15 buyer questions, in a buyer's words, across the 4 to 6 hubs the business has staked its authority on. Add two control questions you cannot win and one canary you already win.
- Fix the test protocol. Hold location, language, device, account state and engine mode steady for the quarter, because most apparent drops are protocol drift. Use a clean session with web search on, since default modes answer from memory and cite nothing.
- Get a baseline. Run each question across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and log cited, mentioned without a link, or absent, plus who got cited instead.
- Open the doors. Check robots.txt and the CDN for each crawler, then confirm indexing.
- Audit and rewrite. Score priority pages, run the page-alone test, and rewrite failures answer-first. Restructure a thin page before writing a new one, cheap fixes first.
- Compound. Build hub content, earn reviews and mentions, and refresh on a cadence. Cited sources get retrieved again.
Priorities come from the log. A question where you are uncited and also rank worse than position 10 in Google is a dual loss and goes first, and a question where competitors are cited instead of you for two consecutive runs becomes a content brief.
My book sets the citation check weekly, and the prompt library version runs the full cycle every two to four weeks, because engines re-index slowly and tighter runs mostly measure noise.
Allow a day before retesting a crawler fix. OpenAI says robots.txt changes reach ChatGPT search in about 24 hours, and Perplexity's crawler guide gives up to 24 hours too.
For tracking you can rent a tool or build your own workflow, and I compare the options in my roundup of AI visibility tools. If you would rather hire it out, my guide on how to choose a GEO agency lists the questions to ask before you sign.
How Do You Measure Answer Engine Optimization?
Measure answer engine optimization per engine, on a fixed set of buyer questions, with linked citations kept apart from bare mentions. Then add the first-party reports from Bing and Google and your AI referral traffic.
| Metric | What it counts | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Citation rate | Valid tests citing a page of yours, divided by valid tests, per engine | Clean-session runs on the fixed set |
| Mention without a link | Answers that name the brand but cite other sources | The same runs, in their own column |
| Share of voice | Your citations against the competitors cited for the same questions | The competitor column of the same log |
| Answer accuracy | Whether what the engine says about you is correct and current | Answers read against your product facts |
| Bing AI citations | Citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, plus grounding queries | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report |
| Google AI impressions | Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Search Console generative AI performance reports |
| AI-referred sessions | Visits arriving from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot | Referral sources in your analytics |
| Canary | Whether a question you already win still cites you | One retest every cycle |
Two rules keep the numbers honest. Never count a mention as a citation, and never average a win on one engine with a loss on another, because each engine retrieves differently.
Google announced generative AI performance reports in Search Console on June 3, 2026, and rolled them out to all websites by August 31, 2026. In the Bing export, filter grounding queries on the query text for your hub terms, never on the tool's topic tags, which mislabel homonyms.
My guide to measuring AI visibility sets up the dashboard and ties citations to pipeline.
How Long Does AEO Take, and What Results Should You Expect?
The mechanics move in days, and the trust takes quarters. A crawler fix can reach ChatGPT search in about a day, but steady citations depend on how well your pages answer buyer questions and on what other sites say about you.
Indexing is often the slow part. At the seed-stage agentic AI company where I am fractional CMO, only 19 of 172 URLs were indexed when I started, mostly because of 114 dead legacy URLs. We rebuilt the sitemap, restored the robots.txt sitemap line and wired IndexNow before any rewrite could count.
Expect it to start small. At the data and AI services company where I am CMO, answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot sent 677 visitors in eighteen months, 0.11% of traffic. The brand also appears regularly in Google AI Overviews for data and AI queries, and the data and AI services case study shows how the tracking sits beside the wider inbound program.
The curve can bend once the structure is in place. At the HR tech SaaS company, we built a repeatable process for titles, meta, FAQs, schema and glossary terms, shipping up to ten articles a week, with schema on more than 116 blog posts.
Over the engagement, AI-sourced sessions grew from 335 to 3,200 a month, and SERP features owned grew from 1,000 to 6,100. The HR tech case study walks through the full sequence.
What Are the Most Common AEO Mistakes?
The most common AEO mistake is rewriting content before checking that the engines can reach the page. The rest are cheap to fix.
- Blocking the search crawler by accident. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot covers model training. A blanket AI-bot rule can block both when you meant to block one.
- Burying or hiding the answer. Context paragraphs push the answer away from its heading, and Google asks for important content in text form.
- Schema that disagrees with the page. Google's guidance on succeeding in AI search says all the content in your markup should also be visible on the page.
- Judging from one run. Repeat about 10% of question and engine pairs in a second clean session. If more than 20% disagree, fix the method before you read the results.
- Treating it as a project. Pages decay and dates age. Bing's guidance says regular updates help AI systems reference the current version of your content.
Your First Answer Engine Optimization Move This Week
Pick the one page that should answer your most valuable buyer question. Read the first two sentences under each heading and ask whether they answer that heading on their own.
Then paste the page into a model and ask it to answer the buyer question from the page alone. Rewrite whatever it misses answer-first, publish, and retest next week.
When you want the full program built across every engine, with tracking and audits on a cadence, see how I run AEO and GEO as one AI search visibility program.
